How to File a FAFSA

To help you pay for college expenses as you obtain a degree at George Mason University, you can apply for Financial Aid. The first step in this process is to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

File a FAFSA

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to FAFSA.gov. Click the Start Here button:
  2. Enter your student information and click next:
  3. Click “Start 2012-2013 FAFSA”:
    Note: In order to electronically sign the FAFSA application, you will need to have a Federal Student Aid PIN.  Go to:
    www.pin.ed.gov to create one.
  4. Click on Next after creating your password:
  5. Complete the Student Demographic questions and click next:
  6. Complete the Student Eligibility section and click next:
  7. Enter the Federal School Code (Mason’s Federal School Code is 003749) and press add. Click next to continue:
  8. Fill out the Dependency information section and click next to continue:
  9. Complete the Parent Demographic information (if you are determined to be a dependent student), then click next to continue:
  10. Fill out the Student Financial information and click next:
  11. Once all information has been entered into the FAFSA system, click the SUBMIT MY FAFSA NOW button.
